How to find better-value flights from Sydney to Colombo

Sydney to Colombo is one of the busiest routes for Sri Lankan families in Australia, and fares can swing a lot depending on when and how you book. These are the things that make the biggest difference.
Book peak periods early
December–January and the April school holidays, which often line up with Sinhala and Tamil New Year, are the busiest times on this route. Seats at the lower fare levels sell first, so for these dates it pays to book several months ahead.
Outside peak periods there’s usually more flexibility, and you can sometimes book closer to departure without paying much more.
Be flexible by a few days
Moving your departure or return by one to three days can change the fare noticeably, especially around school holidays. When you send us a request, choose a date flexibility option and we’ll check the days around your preferred dates.
Look at the whole journey, not just the price
Most Sydney to Colombo fares include a stop. A cheaper fare can cost you in other ways, so compare:
- Total travel time, including layovers
- Overnight layovers that may need a hotel
- Checked baggage allowance, which varies a lot between airlines
- Whether the whole trip is on one ticket, so your bags go through and you’re protected if a connection is missed
Watch the baggage allowance
Families often travel with gifts on the way out and food or clothing on the way back. A fare that includes a generous checked allowance can work out cheaper than a lower fare plus excess baggage charges. We list the allowance with every option we send.
Consider a stopover
